Fire departments are rated by the North Carolina Department of Insurance (DOI) on a schedule determined by DOI or at the request of a specific Fire Department. A part of the rating is determining the distance homes are located from a department's rated fire station. There are three classifications used by DOI, Five (5) Mile Insurance Area, Six (6) Mile Insurance Area and the Service Area. Those located in the 5 Mile Insurance Area are located WHOLLY within 5 road miles of a rated fire station. Those in the 6 Mile Service Area are located WHOLLY at a distance of greater than five miles and up to six miles from a rated fire station. Those in the Service Area are located at a distance greater than six miles from a rated fire station. These districts are static and not updated until the DOI does another rating of the subject fire department. |
